Custom Motorcycles.  All motorcycles can be customized by modifying all or parts of a stock motorcycle called “stock bike” or “stocker”. Or it can be done by buildinga motorcycle from the ground up (from scratch) using a mix of stock and/or after-market or one-off parts fabricated for this purpose. Most of the time, frame geometry, engine, sheet metal and various components are modified. Custom motorcycles are highly stylized, unique and sometimes produced in very small quantities. A motorcycle is customized for the pleasure of its owner, to compete in motorcycle bike shows and can become a status symbol. Professional custom builders became household names when TV started to run series showing how custom built motorcycles are designed andfabricated. But some motorcycle enthusiasts feel that the only true customs are those built in a home garage by the person who will ride his or her own creation. Some motorcycle manufacturers, such as Harley-Davidson and Honda, include the word “custom” as part of a model name. If capitalized, Custom does not describe a custom motorcycle as described above but a special model of a mass-produced motorcycle. “Factory customs” like “Big Dog Motorcycles” or “American Iron Horse” typically do not offer the total individuality of a home built bike or of a “one off custom”, but they have some of the appeal that comes with a custom bike and several benefits of a factory production motorcycle.
