Indian Motorcycles. America’s love for the motorcycle began in 1900 with bicycle racer George M. Hendee and engineering wizard Carl Oscar Hedstrom.  In 1901, the partners unveiled their first creation, the 1901 Single.  Indian was the first American motorcycle and was the inventor of the loop frame &swingarm. Indian offered the first dedicated board-track factory racer ever sold directly to the public.. Equally revolutionary, post-war Chiefs and Scouts were based on Gustafson’s side-valve, 42-degree, V-Twin Powerplus engine. This engine forced other manufacturers, including Harley-Davidson, to abandon their OHV designs and develop side-valve motors to be competitive with the Indians. Indian was the world’s top racing bike for 50 years. Following the war, Indian struggles with re-entry into the public market.  Post World War 2, Indian sales continued to decline and Indian was forced to halt production in 1953. There was numerous attempts to revive the Indian name until 1998, when several formerly competing companies merged to become the Indian Motorcycle Company.  Manufacturing began in 1999, but the venture proved unsuccessful, and 2003 was the company’s final model year. In 2004, the Stellican Group acquired trademark rights and intellectual properties, and began to gear up for a return to production by the second half of 2008.
